Top 10 Ways to Experience Austin, TX

Austin is a unique and exciting place. After spending a week there for our anniversary, we highly recommend a visit to this growing city. We had adventure after adventure with lots of food and sweets in between. (Don't worry - those posts are up next!) We never felt stressed about time and managed to sleep in while still covering a lot of ground. Our time in Austin included five days and four nights - we made them all count!

{ONE}

Our first stop in Austin was a local brewery that Chris wanted to check out. South Austin Brewery turned out to be a double win because they were also having a record sale. Later in the week, we also ventured over to Waterloo Records for additional record perusing. And swung by ABGB for a quick drink with the locals before we left Austin.

Everyone knows that Texas loves football. We hadn't originally planned to attend a Longhorns game, but the timing worked out with our schedule. The most impressive part of the game proved to be pre-game when the team rolled out a nearly 50-yard Texas flag and proceeded to sing the state song. WOW! Definitely never seen anything quite like that before. Texans sure are proud to be Texans. We also happened to be there on alumni band day so the halftime show proved an extra special treat as well.

We left the game a tad early in order to make it over to the Esther's Follies venue on 6th Street in time for the late show. Esther's Follies is a combination of comedic musical theater (think SNL skits set to music) and magic. The focus of the evening leaned heavily toward politics given it was an election year, but we really enjoyed the performance. Definitely a must-attend event! Afterward, we walked up and down 6th Street taking in the scene. Austin is known for its music scene and we were able to take in a bit of the eclectic music atmosphere as we wandered this Bourbon Street type environment.

Chris found a brand new cider tasting room near our South Austin hotel location. We spent a good portion of the afternoon visiting with the owner, Mike, and trying his four different ciders. It was practically a private tasting since no one else arrived until about 15 minutes before we departed. Surprisingly, I liked Hefe Apfel cider best. The tasting was great, but the company even better - there's nothing like chatting with a local. If you live in or visit the Austin area, stop in Austin Wine & Cider for a drink and tell Mike we said hello!

The number one item on Chris' things to do in Austin list was visit the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum. I left amazed by the volume of communications and information on display. We both could have stayed there all day. The most fascinating part of the museum proved the recorded phone conversations.  There were stations set up throughout the various levels of the museum where you could listen to phone conversations between LBJ and J. Edgar Hoover, MLK, Jr., Lady Bird, incoming President-elect Nixon, various Senators, and so many others. I was completely hooked. Chris and I went to see All The Way on Broadway a couple years ago so a chunk of the info was quite familiar, but we were still engrossed in all the details and artifacts. The museum was easily the most interesting place we encountered on our visit. It is certainly worth a look (and listen)!

I had heard mixed reviews regarding the Austin Bat Tour before we made our plans. As it turns out, the tour is a great way to learn more about the history and growth of Austin. The first hour of the tour was a sunset cruise on the lake with a humorous and engaging commentary on the skyline buildings and area. This portion was far more interesting than the actual bat watching portion. We definitely saw the bats. Perhaps about a million of them. Seriously, it was a tad unnerving how many of them just live in the crevices of the bridge. After about five minutes of seeing these tiny creatures fly back and forth between the bridge and a nearby tree, I was ready to head out. I would say skip this, but the sunset cruise portion was really neat and informative. Also, please note that opting to stand on the bridge and watch the bats for free will NOT give you the proper angle to see anything. If you are willing to make the trek over to the bridge, definitely go ahead and book the boat tour.

As a blogger, I have seen Austin murals (particularly the I love you so much one) for years now. I was beyond excited to be able to drive around and find them with Chris. He was decidedly less excited, but since it was our anniversary he played along nicely. It was fun to spot them, but since we were playing tourist on a random Tuesday it was much more difficult to find a photographer. We made the best of it though. We even found a graffiti park along the way.

A local recommended Mount Bonnell to us. While it didn't blow us away like we were expecting it might, we did enjoy the opportunity to see the city from a different vantage point.  I can imagine it is beautiful during sunrise and sunset. We didn't spend much time here, but I'd glad we made the trek up to check it out.

{NINE}

After our delicious anniversary dinner, we stopped by a mini-golf location that we had seen open the night before. It was inexpensive to play both courses (18 holes each) and as we discovered halfway through our first game it was also BYOB. The course seemed to be a popular spot for both couples and groups celebrating a birthday. One course was more challenging than the other and we split wins. Definitely a fun way to end the evening.

Finally, let me recommend a free tour of the Capitol Building. They run on the half hour. We enjoyed learning more about the history of Texas and how their state government operates. The building has some beautiful design work throughout as well.

Have you ever experienced Austin?
What did we miss?

Five on Friday!

It's FRIDAY!! It been an eventful week that spanned ALL the emotions. For now, I'll leave it at that. Today, I wanted to share a few tidbits about the happenings of my week/month.

{ONE}

A few weeks ago, Chris and I ventured over to New Jersey to watch his cousin play in a collegiate soccer game. The weather didn't really cooperate with us that particular day, but despite the drizzling rain and cold temps our team was victorious!  And Myles Jordan even scored the first goal of the match! It was great to watch him play.

Loving is a beautiful love story that finds justice at its core. Fortunately for me and Chris, Richard and Mildred Loving (alongside their ACLU legal team) fought the good fight for many years and finished the race in 1967 with a Supreme Court decision that makes our marriage legal today. As Hillary reminded us in her concession speech, "please never stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it." Needless to say, I highly recommend that everyone watch this movie.

I've volunteered for organizations that assist under served students in the past, but I recently became involved with Let's Get Ready. This organization provides low income high school students with free SAT preparation, admissions counseling, and other support services needed to gain admission to and graduate from college. Services are provided by volunteer college students who serve as role models and mentors. We are hosting our annual benefit next week. I'm excited about the opportunity to see how it all comes together after the hard work and effort our committee put into the event. If you have interest in learning more about the event, click HERE.

This month I am co-hosting an instagram challenge. Find me @alhadventures - I invite you all to participate! It has been a lot of fun getting to know others by using #novemberphoto2016 on all our posts. Please join us for some photo fun the rest of November!

I'm going to DISNEY WORLD!! I'm actually just going to be there for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, but I am super excited to have my niece and nephew show me all their favorite rides. I have never been a major Disney fan, but I can honestly say I am stoked to have the opportunity to experience it with my two favorite kiddos! It should be a blast!!

What is going on in your life this week/month?

Red Rocks in Denver

As you saw yesterday, the main reason for our Denver trip was to cross off another stadium on my bucket list. We also managed to fit in a soccer game.  Surrounding all the sports action, we did find a bit of time to enjoy nature while we were in this beautiful area.

It would have been ideal to experience a concert at Red Rocks. We couldn't fit that into the schedule this time so we settled for just checking out the amphitheater grounds instead.

Definitely look forward to finding a concert and heading back there in the future!

Big Apple Tour with Mom & Dad: Part One

When my parents visit the Big Apple, they sure do make the most of it. We always find something exciting to do when they venture up to the city. This time, we started with a free informational and historical tour of St. Patrick's Cathedral. The tours all begin at 10am though the day of the week varies. The amount of knowledge the guide provided was incredible. We really enjoyed learning more about the beautiful structure. The most interesting Saint we learned about was St. Anthony - he helps when you need to find something that has been lost.

Later in the week, we made our way out to Coney Island for some Nathan's hot dogs and a whirl on the Wonder Wheel. Mom decided not to try the Wonder Wheel when we noticed that the carts actually move as the wheel turns. Dad and I gave it a go, but were terrified once we started moving. We survived, but not without a few yelps along the way. After briefly watching the ocean waves, we were off to the next adventure.

Our sporting event for the trip involved a short train ride to Jersey for a NY Red Bulls soccer match. Chris was excited to share his wealth of soccer knowledge. Mom and Dad hadn't ever been to a soccer match, but they seemed to enjoy it. We even managed to see a couple goals - double the fun!

I made a rice krispie cake for Dad's birthday...and he even found his way to the infamous Marilyn Monroe grate to celebrate!

Stay tuned for part two later this week...and I'll be having my own version of Broadway week on the blog next week!

A Different Kind of Super Bowl Sunday

It feels strange to NOT be working on Super Bowl Sunday.  For the past six years, I've spent this week and day Super busy.  As it turns out, it's actually a lot of fun to not be stressed and exhausted during Super Bowl week.  I was able to get a lot done this week with most of my colleagues out on the west coast.  And I'll certainly enjoy watching the game in my pajamas rather than running around on the field level concourse in a suit! I'm hoping for an exciting game regardless of the outcome. It would be nice to see Manning win and ride off into the sunset, but I also love the heart and personality of Cam and the Panthers.  Honestly, I'm most excited about the commercials and our tasty array of goodies!  Happy Super Bowl Sunday, friends!!

Who are you rooting for tonight - Panthers or Broncos?

Triple G! Triple G! Triple G!

Boxing was never a sport I really watched, but with all the hype from the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight earlier this year I sort of got sucked in.  After I moved past the blood and general barbaric nature of it all, I found the sport to be quite intriguing.  It requires incredible skill, perseverance, and determination.  And discipline.  Lots of discipline.

When Chris saw that Gennady Golovkin was set to appear in a match against David Lemieux at Madison Square Garden, his only question to me was would I like to go.  My only question to him was when.  As it turns out, the fight fell on October 17 - the day before our 1st wedding anniversary!  We decided to make a night of it with a nice dinner out at one of our favorite Italian restaurants in Hell's Kitchen beforehand.

We arrived at MSG early enough to see all three of the undercard matches before the main event. First were fellow middleweights - Tureano Johnson v Eamonn O'Kane.  The fight was an easy decision for Johnson, but you have to give O'Kane credit for staying in there especially after being knocked down twice in the opening round.

Next, the heavyweights hit the ring.  It was certainly exciting to see such massive men boxing.  Luis Ortiz easily handled Matias Vidondo...eventually knocking him out.  Without a doubt, this was the most fun match to watch all night.

Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and Brian Viloria gave everyone an exciting fight in the flyweight division.  It was incredible to see these two box.  Chocolatito was victorious with a technical knock-out coming in the ninth round.

The main event was much anticipated by the crowd when it finally came time for Golovkin and Lemieux to take the ring.  The crowd heavily favored Triple G, but surprisingly there were still many cheering the underdog on.  Lemieux managed to get in a few punches, but Golovkin handled him throughout the match with absolutely no issues.  The result - a technical knock-out in the eighth round.  Had it continued, I'm certain we would have seen a knock-out victory in the next round.

Overall, we decided we would probably stick to watching fights at home.  The crowd was simply out of control...spilling their drinks, falling down, generally obnoxious.  It was exciting to be there in person for the night, but not quite worth the hassle of being around so much nonsense from all the strangers in the crowd.

Do you enjoy attending live sporting events?
Or would you rather just watch at home?

A Perfect End to Summer: Baseball & Ice Cream

Sadly, summer is coming to an end.  Everyone is headed back to school, and fall is just around the corner now.  I couldn't think of a better way to close this fun-filled few months than a trip to the ball park!  My parents have been to the city to visit numerous times, but had never ventured up to the Bronx to check out the Yankees.

We caught a great game over Labor Day weekend.  The Tampa Bay Rays were in town.  The game went back and forth with the home team finally pulling out the victory.  We saw at least three home runs that I can recall so there wasn't much of a lull in action at this game!

We enjoyed seats in a shady part of the ballpark, but that didn't mean it wasn't hot.  The weather had been fairly mild, but really peaked over the holiday weekend!  Guess that was summer's way of saying she wasn't quite ready to turn in for the year!

And when it's hot and humid out, there's only one treat that truly satisfies - ICE CREAM!!  We really got our money's worth at a unique ice cream shop in Chinatown!

We loved being able to watch our ice cream come to life before our very eyes at 10 Below.  We all selected a different flavor...and I managed to get photos of each being made despite the tight conditions in the small shop! #bloggerwin

Complete process of making Strawberry Shawty...YUM!

I tried three of the flavors we ordered and each was delicious!!  I don't think it is possible to go wrong with the ice cream combos at 10 Below!  We enjoyed Monkey Business, Cookie Monster, Strawberry Shawty, and Key Lime Pie (pictured going clockwise below).

The shop is hidden in the depths of Chinatown and not very close to the subway, but you better believe Chris and I will be back before too long!

How did you spend Labor Day weekend?

Family Fun in the Big Apple

The #MarriedMaitlands had our first overnight visitors when the #HeflinNortheastTour2015 came to town.  We had SO much fun hanging out with Jordan and Jen while entertaining (or rather being entertained by) our favorite niece and nephew.  And, of course, answering all of Brinley's many questions!  We packed a lot of fun into the week they visited!

We had some pizza on our rooftop to celebrate their arrival to New York City.  The next day, they did some sightseeing before we met up after work to head up to the Bronx for a Yankees game.  Who knew we'd see history, too?  We arrived at the ballpark just in time to catch A-Rod's 3000th hit...and it was a home run to boot!

We all ventured out to the Children's Museum of Manhattan on Saturday.  We spent some quality time playing and running and sliding and jumping there before we ventured out to a BBQ in Hoboken.  The kids really loved the park we found out there.  It was fun for adults, too!  Not gonna lie, I definitely enjoyed relaxing in the tire swing for a few minutes :)

On Sunday, we made our way out to Long Island to visit with Chris' family for awhile.  We grabbed lunch at Grimaldi's where Brinley was fascinated by the pizza making process.  And we definitely had to try out the ice cream at Carvel's before we came back to the city.

I took the day off to spend time with everyone the next day.  We found our way to Madison Square Park for a Shake Shack lunch and a romp through the playground.  Then, the kids had a blast checking out everything in FAO Schwarz - especially all the larger than life stuffed animals!

And, finally, we spent some time in Central Park.  Feeding the ducks, fish, and turtles some stale bread was a highlight of the afternoon.  I took a whirl on the carousel with each of them.  And they enjoyed the playground before we made our way back to the apartment in Long Island City.

That night, the kids ran off their excess energy on the rooftop while the adults enjoyed the splendid view of Manhattan.

Tuesday posed a challenge for Chris and I.  We were tasked with babysitting while Jordan and Jen enjoyed an evening show in the city.  Earlier that day, the Heflin crew stopped by my work for a quick visit in between sightseeing adventures.  That night, Chris and I took the kids to our apartment playroom, watched "Emo" (aka Finding Nemo) and Veggie Tales, made popcorn with Brinley, and successfully managed to get Landon to sleep.  What a night!

We really enjoyed having the company for a few days.  While our apartment isn't nearly big enough for four adults and two children, it was still sad to see them go.

The kids have changed SO much since we last saw them at Christmas so it was fun to be able to interact with them more this time.  We can't wait to see how much they have changed by the next time we see them in person.  Thankfully, we have FaceTime to tide us over in between!
