Leonardo DiCaprio is one of my all-time favorite actors. I was perhaps mildly obsessed with him in my younger years. And while I think he did have a great performance in this movie, I really didn't like the film overall. It was just too much for me...especially since it is based on a true story. There was too much vulgarity. Too much nudity and unnecessary demeaning sexual acts and references. Too much positivity regarding drugs and alcohol. Too much disgusting behavior. And also WAY too long! I do think the story itself is an interesting one, but I believe I would have rather read about it than seen it. As I mentioned, Leo does a great job acting, but it was all just too much to take in for me. There was one particular scene toward the end that I am sure was a doozie to film that had me laughing for a bit, but otherwise I just felt gross watching this one. Though it did have a handful of comical moments, I don't really recommend it at all.

I read the books and can't imagine what the movie was like, although I heard they were disgusting. I'm disappointed that they made the movies so vile because it could've been good without all that-- there was plenty of story to tell otherwise. But what do you expect from a sex and drug obsessed hollywood? Oh well...

ReplyDeleteIs this movie doing anything new? At this point, "white Wall Street conmen experience meteoric rise and disgraceful plummet, as accompanied by prostitutes and drugs; cause us to question our own social values" isn't new ground to tread. In a year where we had some pretty cool and unusual things happening in mainstream cinema (an animated "princess" movie where the most important relationship was between two sisters, a space thriller whose face was a middle-aged woman, a high-grossing action movie starring a young woman, a sci-fi blockbuster where 2/3 leads were NOT white men, a female buddy-cop movie), this just seems....tired. And honestly, nothing in this movie asks any questions that haven't been asked a million times, in similar explorations. Lets celebrate Progress not Excess.
